Q1 How do I stop = signs appearing in my post?

A1 - Make sure you have your mail programme set to Plain Text with Quoted Printable switched off.

    How do I do that?

In Microsoft Outlook Express go to
    TOOLS - OPTIONS - SEND -
Make sure that "Send in Plain Text" is checked then click on SETTINGS and in the drop down box make sure it says NONE.

    In Microsoft Outlook go to

TOOLS- OPTIONS- MAIL FORMAT - MESSAGE FORMAT

make sure that Send Plain Text is showing.

Click on SETTINGS and in the drop down box make sure it says NONE.

That should solve the problem. Other mail programmes have similar settings.

For AOL and Incredimail you need to use plain text - no colour - no backgrounds no fancy fonts.

     Q2 - How do I make a signature file?

A2 - Depends upon your mailer but most of them except AOL you can make your email address "blue" and clickable by typing it in this format

    mailto:someone@yourisp.net

Make sure that there are no spaces

    In Microsoft Outlook Express

go to TOOLS - STATIONERY -SIGNATURE -TEXT
You can then type in your signature file and if you want to add it automatically to your posts check "Add this signature to all outgoing messages".
Below this you will see the opportunity to use a business card. DO NOT use this for the BichonFrise List.

    AOL V6

Instructions on the MAC AOL (don't know if PC is the same)
    1. Go to Mail Center at top of Screen
2 Pull down Menu has a selection called Set Up Mail Signatures
    3. From Set Up Mail Signatures Select the box Create
    4. Top Box is to identify what signature you are creating
    5. Middle Box is what you want to appear in e-mail
    6. When finished select Set as Default
    7. If you have several signatures set up, you have to change the Set as
Default for it to use the one you want.
The e-mail address and the link will automatically appear blue and
underlined; you don't have to write mailto: or do anything.

Q3 - What are the List archives and how do I use them?

A3 - This is a free service for members only and you will find the previous year's  messages posted to the list here.

    First - the URL is

    http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/

Once you log on to that site - using your normal BFL email address - you will see a link that says * ONLINE LIST ARCHIVES* -

Click on that and it will take you to a List of all the dog lists hosted by LSOFT.

Click on the BichonFrise L one.

THE FIRST TIME ONLY you need to tell it a password of your choosing before you can log in.
The server will mail you back to check you really are a member and using your correct email address. You will reply OK.
If you don't accept cookies or are a WEBTV member - you may have some erratic difficulties in logging on.

Normally after that you will be able to get in to the archives when you want - as it puts a file (cookie) back to your browser so you don't need to go through the whole process each time.

You will get to a page which shows all the posts for each week - above that there is a link (often overlooked) called *SEARCH THE ARCHIVES*. Click on it and it will take you to another page.

Once there you can ask for whatever you like by Subject - by Date by any combination.

With something like *potty training* or "hot spots" I'd suggest you initially limit it to the last few months not the whole two years!

If you have changed your email address and can not access the archives try the following:

Go to the archives and select Post Message to List - that should give  you the option to reset cookie.

Q4 - How do I include part of a message in my answer?

A4 -  There are several ways - but for the list the safest way is the usual Windows facility of Copy and Paste.

Highlight the text you want to include by holding down the left mouse button and dragging across the text. Then with the text still highlighted go Edit - Copy (this puts the text on an invisible clipboard within the computer). You can now start a new message to the Bichon List

    BICHONFRISE-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM

and click in the box where you will write your new message.

Then go Edit - Paste and the text should appear.

If you use the "Reply To" facility - and your mail programme is set to include the message you are answering - you must cut out everything that you don't want to include by highlighting the text and using the delete key.

In both instances you need to copy or type in the relevant subject line.

    or

    SET BICHONFRISE-L NODIGEST

No subject is required and there should be nothing else in the message ie no signature file.
